The following is from his Civil War Pension papers:
"William Fonda: 5' 3 3/4" 130 lbs., light complexion, age 60" (dated August 23, 1882)
Please note that of the many, many original records on both William and his wife Mary nowhere does it state his birth date so I don't know where the birth date on the memorial came from. In 2 places in his CW Pension file where he states his age the year of birth works out to 1822 or 23. The obit posted on his memorial suggests he was born 1833 and that he left a wife and 2 children but in actuality he had 3 sons remaining and his and Mary's little girl, age 3, had died 3 weeks prior to William's death.
