Henry Engel was born in 1885 to Wilhelm Engel and Laura Wolthers Engel in Meriden, Steele County, Minnesota He was a twin to a sister who died shortly after the birth. He had three brothers. He married Louise Dorthea Janike in December of 1909 who was the daughter of Frederich Janike and Fredricka Piepper, both of whom had immigrated from Germany. He was a carpenter by trade and provided for his family with his skills. They went through very difficult times in the small town of New Richland, Minnesota. The economy and the unsteady work in the small town presented a very low income to the family and Louise took in laundry and helped in any way she could. The depression did not help the situation and in the early 50s the family relocated to Fort Worth, Texas. The children were all grown by then. Their children were Wilfred, Ervin, Lola and Lavonna. They were the grandparents of 14 children.
