George was the 6th of 7 children of William Kier and Catherine Slack Kier. He was born in Brown Co, Ohio in 1846. The family moved briefly to Warren Co, Illinois in 1860 and then moved to Chariton Co, MO about 1865 where George's father purchased 80 acres and George's oldest brother purchased another 80 acres across the road. George married Rhoda Reeder in 1872 and she died of typhoid the very next year. George never married again. Two years later (1875) his mother died there in Chariton County, MO. The family was devastated and they split up. Most moved west to Kansas and Nebraska. George was the only one to stay in Chariton County to oversee the sale of the family farms and where he worked as a farm laborer for TP Chapman. He moved to KS and then OK to be near his siblings until 1915. After that he spent most of the rest of his life alone working odd jobs in Colorado until his death in 1931. He was working as a janitor and living in a boarding house.
