Born Richard Joseph Yelvington, Jr., he attended Mainland High School in Daytona Beach, Florida and played collegiate football at the University of Georgia. Selected by the Giants during the 23rd round of the 1951 NFL Draft, he appeared in 62 regular season games. The beginning of his career was delayed by a year as he served with the United States Army during the Korean War. In 1956, Yelvington experienced a world championship as a member of the NFL Champion Giants' squad as he provided key blocking on for quarterback Charley Conerly and running back Frank Gifford. Additionally, he displayed durability as he missed only one game during the course of four seasons (1953 to 1956). After retiring from football, he worked for the United States Government with the Treasury and Justice Departments.
