British Lieutenant General, Colonial Governor. He began his career being commissioned a Lieutenant in the Royal 61st Regiment of Foot in 1828. He served in a variety of staff posts and was subsequently promoted Colonel Assistant Military Secretary in November 1854. During the Crimean War, he served as Major General in command of the British bases set up in the Ottoman Territory. After the war, he was with the War Office as Secretary for Military Correspondence, 1857 to 1859. He began his career in colonial government when appointed High Commissioner of the Ionian Islands in February 1859 and setup the judiciary of the islands before the end of the commissionership in November 1863. In 1864, he was appointed Governor of Malta and was appointed Governor of Jamaica serving December 1865 to July 1866. In 1867, he was appointed Controller-in-Chief and Under-Secretary at the War Office and was elected a member of Parliament for Ripon in 1871, at the rank of Lieutenant General serving until his death.
