Arrested in Pittsburgh on 29 Jul 1864, he was forced to muster in the day of arrest and charged $37.34 for cost of arrest and transportation. Provost marshal for Pennsylvania's 22nd District recommended he not be court-martialed because "circumstances in his case are very mitigating." (Those circumstances not detailed in his Compiled Military Service Records.) Promoted to Sergeant on 3 Aug 1864; reduced to ranks on 20 Sep 1864; detached as a Teamster to Quartermaster department, 25th Army Corps, on 20 Dec 1864; honorably discharged with company at Brownsville TX on 4 Nov 1865.
