St. George, Utah Actress-Dancer Regina Carrol of films and stage died Wednesday, November 4th of Cancer in St. George, Utah. Miss Carrol, the wife of film director Al Adamson was born in Boston, Mass. and moved with her family to Los Angeles at an early age.
At five years of age she was already a professional actress and dancer under her real name of Regina Gelfan, performing in stage productions of THE CHILDREN’S HOUR, WISH YOU WERE HERE and DADDY LONG LEGS. She went on to play the part of the second lead in a road tour of, WEST SIDE STORY.
Discovered for films by family friend, actor Steve Cochran, she appeared in various major studio productions including THE BEAT GENERATION (with Cochran), John Ford’s TWO RODE
TOGETHER with James Stewart and Richard Widmark, THE SLENDER THREAD with Sidney Poitier, FROM THE TERRACE, THE GLASS BOTTOM BOAT and VIVA LAS VEGAS starring Elvis Presley, whom she dated in that era. Her work on Television included THE DINAH SHORE SHOW, ROUTE 66 and OZZIE AND HARRIET. In between films and T.V, she had solo parts in shows in Las Vegas sharing the spotlight with Milton Berle, Pearl Bailey, Louis Prima and Tony Bennett.
She started her own act which toured all the exclusive night clubs in Europe, including the Monte Carlo Casino. While living in Las Vegas she had her own television interview show, THE REGINA CARROL SHOW. She also wrote a column about the entertainment industry of the LAS VEGAS PANORAMA.
Miss Carrol’s greatest fame was to come as the star of Horror-Science Fiction and Drive-In Movies directed by her husband to be, Al Adamson. She currently enjoys cult status in that field.
Miss Carrol was first introduced to Adamson when he was casting SATAN’S SADISTS (1969) a motorcycle film starring Russ Tamblyn and Scott Brady. She was selected as the female
lead and went on tour to promote the film starting with it’s world premiere in Birmingham, Alabama.
Being an athletic dancer as well as an actress she was able to perform many action scenes on her own including riding motorcycles, horseback riding and her own film fights. She was well accepted in this first action film which led to her starring in many additional pictures including: MAN WITH THE SYNTHETIC BRAIN, THE FEMALE BUNCH, ANGELS’ WILD WOMEN, BRAIN OF BLOOD, DRACULA VS. FRANKENSTEIN and CARNIVAL MAGIC (1982) her last screen appearance, which was a family oriented circus-type film.
Miss Carrol’s work in the comedy BLAZING STEWARDESSES (1975) drew critical praise for her part in a Judy Holiday type role. She co-starred with many film veteran’s including: Yvonne DeCarlo, Russ Tamblyn, Kent Tayor, Grant Williams, Robert Livingston, J. Carrol Naish, Lon Chaney jr. and John Carradine among others. Her comedy scenes in BLAZING STEWARDESSES (1975) with Harry and Jimmy Ritz of THE RITZ BROTHERS were particularirly funny.
In recent years she had been performing in a one woman show tribute to dancer Isadora Duncan. Her interest in Native American culture led to her performing a series of shows in Palm Springs, California related to Indian Dances. Shortly before her death she was at work on a story about Elvis Presley’s stage and film career as she saw it unfold.
Memorial services were held at Christ of The Desert, Newman Center, 73441 Fred Waring Drive Palm Desert, California on Thursday, November 12th, 1992 at 6:00 P. M., under the direction of Spilsbury-Desert Rose Memorial Chapel, St. George, Utah.
