US Navy Commodore. He graduated from the US Navy Academy as a Midshipman in 1871 and served as an officer in Navy War Department. During the Spanish-American War of 1898, he was a Lieutenant Commander in the North Atlantic Squadron in command of the USS Passaic. After the war, he served as adviser Captain on the Navy Flag Staff and retired as one of the Navy's last Commodores in 1901.
