ARLINGTON -- Helen Elizabeth Martin Beeman, age 91, a longtime resident of Arlington, passed away on Sunday, Feb. 3, 2013.
Elizabeth "Beth" was born on June 11, 1921, in Fort Worth. She was the oldest of three girls born to Albert C. and Effa Helen Martin. Music, specially singing, was part of Elizabeth's life from an early age. During her teenage years her parents asked a college acquaintance, Ina Gilliland, to teach their daughter voice lessons. It was through Ina Gilliland that she met her future husband, William Edwin Beeman. A trip to New York City and the 1939 World's Fair was a special college graduation gift for Ina's nephew, William Edwin Beeman, and a chance to have her best student, Elizabeth, try out at radio stations. Elizabeth returned to Fort Worth, but she had met the love of her life. Elizabeth attended Texas Christian University, graduating in three years with a degree in music/voice. She lived at home during those college days, riding to school with her father in the first two years, and later took the bus. She worked as a secretary in the Speech Department, and had fond memories of the TCU Glee Club trips to various churches where they might be gone for several days. In 1942, Elizabeth married her one and only love, William Edwin "W.E." Beeman, in Fort Worth. Elizabeth and W.E. began their life together and devoted their lives to teaching and family. W.E. had a long career as a mathematics teacher and faculty member at the University of North Texas, A&M University, and the University of Texas at Arlington. Elizabeth began teaching in the Fort Worth ISD in 1941, and later took time off from teaching to raise her family. In 1955, Elizabeth and W.E. moved to Arlington with their three daughters, Anne, Karen and Gail, and W.E. began teaching at Arlington State College (now the University of Texas at Arlington). Elizabeth continued her involvement with music, and when time permitted returned to teaching in the Fort Worth ISD. While teaching, Elizabeth was always involved with music as a church choir director and as a member of various music clubs. All her family remembers her stunning performance as the "witch" in the Arlington community production of "Hansel and Gretel." Elizabeth was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Arlington, the DAR, the Retired Teachers Association, and the Arlington Music Club. After retirement, Elizabeth and W.E. touched many lives as they traveled and spent time with cherished family and friends. Elizabeth and W.E. shared each other's lives for 62 years, dedicating their life to family, teaching and education.
