Stephen Pitts was born in Iredell County, North Carolina. He had a brother James and two sisters, Elizabeth and Margaret and other unknown sisters. Their father died when he was a young and he was bound out to a strict Presbyterian family. At age 16, he enlisted in the War of 1812 after which he settled in Ohio, where he learned the tailor's trade.

He married Rachel Hendricks on 8 Sept 1818 in Preble County, Ohio. They had eleven children: Cynthia, George, Julia, Eliza, Francis, Mary, David, Martha, Hiram, Rachel and Angeline.

They moved to Richmond where their first two children were born, then they moved to Indianapolis and to Pendleton. He was an avid hunter. He drew a pension for his services i the war.

Rachel died on 14 Aug 1859 at the age of 59 years, and Stephen died a year later in September of 1860.
