He was the first son of ten children of David Beachdel Sr and Susannah Helmon. Settler Christian Beachdel was his grandfather. He farmed and kept clearing land near both of his grandfather's farms. He and Anna Schenck took in Rachel Baker Haines to help raise their sons William, David and John after both her parents died. In about 1850 Samuel made bricks from the fields and built his own Federal style house with them.
