Fritz L. Allwardt, 78, of 1720 Gilber Road,Yakima died Wednesday morning at his residence following a long illness of cardiomyopathy. Mr. Allwardt was born September 3, 1909, in Mexee to pioneer ranchers, Emil and Meta (Hendricks) Allwardt. A 1928 graduate of Moxee High School, he later attended business college in Seattle.

After farming in the Vernita and Selah areas, he moved to his present farm in the Wiley Heights area in 1944, where he was active in dairy and fruit farming until his death.

He married Marguerite Jaeger of Vernita, on December 21, 1932. They would have celebrated their 55th Wedding Anniversary this year.

Mr. Allwardt was active in several local 4-H Clubs from 1952 to 1965, and a strong supporter of the beginning of the West Valley Fair. He was one of the first volunteers of the newly formed West Valley Fire Department in 1960, where he was active for 17 years, retiring in 1977 as the Zone Chief of West Valley Fire Station 2 (Wiley).

He was also a long time member of the Ahtanum Grange; a member of the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge No. 389; and FOE Aerie No. 289.

Survivors include his wife, Marguerite Allwardt of the residence; two sons and their wives, Jack Allwardt of Salinas, California and Robert Allwardt of Klamath Falls, Oregon; four grandchildren; a brother Ted Allwardt of Lewiston, Idaho; and a sister Mrs. Forrest (Johanna) Rodman of Yakima.

He was preceded in death by two brothers. Carl Allwardt and John Allwardt and by a sister, Marie Wilson. Funeral services will be held at 3:00pm Friday in Shaw & Sons Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow in Terrace Heights Memorial Park.
