ELIZABETH I. MEDBURY:

MEDBURY, Elizabeth I. Elizabeth I. Medbury, 86, of Bridgton, ME died Wednesday, (December 22, 2004) at Clover Manor. She was born in West Hartford on August 4, 1918 the daughter of Charles Thomas and Emma Estelle (Markham) Ibell. Elizabeth graduated from Brown University in 1940 where she was active in the sports of lacrosse, field hockey and basketball; was on many committees and was vice-president of her class. While at Brown she met the man who would become her husband of 52 years, Dr. Sawyer E. Medbury, he died on May 4, 1994. They lived in Connecticut for many years before moving to Maine. While in Connecticut, she was active in many groups and was the former president of the Connecticut State Medical Auxiliary. She and her husband purchased land on Long Lake in 1965 and in 1970 Elizabeth opened a used bookstore in eight rooms on the first floor of the Magic Lantern and ran the store in the summers for 20 years. Most will remember the store in the old blacksmith shop on Depot Street with the sign "The Bridgton Book House". She was an avid sports fan, especially of the Red Sox and Ted Williams. Elizabeth was a very loquacious and gregarious person with a very dry sense of humor. She was dedicated to her family and loved to do crossword puzzles. She was predeceased by her husband of 52 years, Dr. Sawyer E. Medbury; and one sister, Lois P. IbelI. Funeral services will be held at the Raymond-Wentworth Funeral Home, 8 Elm Street, Bridgton, ME, TODAY at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Richard Bennett officiating. Burial will be in the Forest Hills Cemetery in the spring.
