Dr. Sawyer Eldredge Medbury, who headed the anesthesiology department at Windham Community Memorial Hospital in Willimantic for many years, died Monday in Brunswick, Ga., while traveling from Florida to his summer home in Bridgton, Maine. He was 75.
Born in Putnam, Dr. Medbury had lived part of the year in Winter Haven, Fla., and then in Bridgton.
Dr. Medbury was at Windham Community Memorial Hospital from 1948 to 1963. From 1963 to 1973, he headed the anesthesiology department at Wesson Memorial Hospital in Springfield. He was a consultant at Johnson Memorial Hospital in Stafford Springs, and Day Kimball Hospital in Putnam.
For the next four years, he was a part-time emergency room physician at St. Mary's Hospital in Lewiston, Maine. He retired in 1978 for health reasons.
He was a graduate of Putnam High School, Brown University and Yale Medical School, and served his internship and residency in anesthesiology at Hartford Hospital. While in the U.S. Navy, Dr. Medbury was chief of anesthesia at the Bethesda Naval Hospital, Bethesda, Md., from 1946-48.
