Danville daughters among survivors
Hannah Mae Gensel, 85, of Park Drive, New Columbia, died Friday, Feb. 1, 2013, at the Evangelical Community Hospital, Lewisburg.
Born in Milton, on Dec. 31, 1927, she was the daughter of Louise and George Kurtz and Milton and Marion Showers. She was married to Donald "Red" Gensel for 51 years until his death in 1997.
Mae was a 1946 graduate of the Milton High School and had worked for Philco in Watsontown, with a photographer in Milton Haines Shoe stores in Milton, Lewisburg and Danville; Rea & Derick Drug Stores for 20 years; and several local clubs as a cook, server and bartender.
She enjoyed reading, hunting, playing cards, darts, bowling and flower arranging. In earlier years, she sang and played music at local fairs and festivals. She enjoyed traveling, but not the family camping she did every summer.
She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary Post 1665, where she was Past District President; Loyal Order of Moose Chapter 910, Fraternal Order of Eagles 1208, where she held all the chairs and was past Mother of the Years; the American Legion Auxiliary Post 71; the Milton Bowling Association; and was a Girl Scout leader for 10 years. She was a charter member of the local Marine Corps League Auxiliary and was Past Department President of the MCLA of PA and held other state and national offices in the MCLA. She was also awarded the Chapel of Four Chaplains Legion of Honor award.
Mae is survived by three daughters: Elizabeth "Libby" and Howard "Howdy" Knapp of Danville; Christina "Chris" and Dale Hoover of Danville; and Twila Gensel of New Columbia; a daughter-in-law, Catherine "Cathy" Gensel, of New Berlin; six grandchildren: Christian "Bud" Cawley; Kimberly and Andrew Rohrer; Richard and Angela Gensel; Jolene and Roger Helwig; Karen Robinson; and Kendra Gensel; seven great-grandchildren: Madelynn and Andrew Rohrer; Hailey and Allissa Gensel; Ajay Troxell; Alex Helwig; and Kile Roeder; a sister; Nancy Hans Lobao; and a brother; Bryon "Laffy" Kurtz.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Donald "Ken" Gensel Jr.; a grandson, Jeffrey Robinson; two sisters: Betty Fisher and Joan Byers; and three brothers: Jack Marr, Earl "Pooch" Showers and Robert Showers.
Friends and relatives will be received on Monday, Feb. 4, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Shaw Funeral Home, 400 N. Front St., Milton. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. John H. Shaw III officiating. Burial will follow in the Twin Hills Memorial Park, Muncy.
The family will provide flowers and ask for memorial contributions to be made to the MCLA of PA, Inc. (on the memo line: Scholarship Fund), PNP Ruth S. Moyse Scholarship Chairman, 401 S. New Ardmore Ave., Broomall, PA 19008-2840 or to a charity of the donor's choice.
