Ida was one of six children born to Thomas and Larcinda (nee Combs) Taylor. Born in Kentucky, the family moved to Missouri sometime before 1910, when they appeared in the Taney County census. They moved to Mineral WA shortly after and she married Noel McPherson there in 1916. (Noel was the brother of her sister-in-law, Chelsea McPherson.)

There was a considerable amount of moving in their marriage. They married in Mineral in 1916. Their first two children were born there. Their third child was born in Missouri in 1923. By 1930, they were back in Washington. They lived in Malone (Grays Harbor County) in 1930, Selah (Yakima County) by 1935 and Seattle (King County) by 1948.
