Giles Barto served as a Private in the 3rd US Heavy Artillery, Company L, 1847-1848, during the Mexican War. Despite his age, 43, at the beginning of the Civil War, he enlisted in the 3rd Wisconsin Cavalry, Company H., on December 1, 1861, committing to a three year enlistment. Presumably because of his prior military experience in the Mexican War, he was made the 1st Sgt. of the company, the second highest non-commissioned rank in the army at the time. First Sgt. Barto served until January 15, 1864, when he was discharged for disability. Still wishing to serve, he then transferred to the 7th Veterans Reserve Corps, Company C., until the end of the war, as reflected on his tombstone. After the war he continued his vocation as a stone mason until the time of his death at age 84.
