Walter Warren Barney along with several other members of a Hand Cart Trek to the SaltLake Valley, were camped along the trail when Brigam Young came into camp and ask the men if he would stay with the remaining Trekkers, would the men join the Mormon Battalion and go to California to help with the conflict with the Mexican Army. Bro. Barney along with several other men left their women and children under the guidence of Brigam Young and set out for California, but by the time they arrived in California they weren't needed.
‘Joined for Service and Enrolled at the General Rendezvous' July 16, 1846, at Council Bluffs, Iowa, and all were ‘Mustered into Service' at the same place on the same date.
