Florence Lenore Barron Cowan Boyd
Florence Lenore (Cowan) Boyd, 92, of Rancho Bernardo, Calif. passed away April 3, 2009 in Rancho Bernardo, Calif. She was born Aug. 4, 1916 to F. Ray Barron and Lenore Ella Reynolds in Redlands, Calif. She married Ben Cowan in April 1939 in San Bernardino, Calif. Florence moved to the desert with her husband, Ben Cowan, shortly following World War II. He began his business life by opening a used car lot in the Flying A gas station in Palm Springs, later expanding to owning several Ford franchises from Palm Springs to Indio. Florence became known for her graciously entertaining friends, including many social events in their home. Ben and Florence owned one of the few houses on the north side of Hwy 111, then later built the first house on the south side, on Ironwood and Burro Weed. She took very seriously her role as "Mother" to her two daughters, Lenore and Annette, in the days when Dr. Morrey made house calls; Keedy's was famous for cheeseburgers and milkshakes; and before air conditioning was available in the summer! She provided them with all that the desert had to offer: horseback riding, dance lessons, piano lessons, girl scouts, and opportunities to participate in the church. The Shadow Mountain Club was the hub of their social events, including Easter celebrations with the Baird Marionettes, elegant Christmas events, and Fourth of July fireworks. She often recalled the movies shown at the club on hot summer nights, where she gathered with her friends while their children sat on the grass, running back and forth to the snack bar! She was very active in the Palm Desert Community Church, which began on Washington Street with the congregation meeting on hay bales! After several years, the little church outgrew itself, and a new facility was built and still exists at its current location on Hwy 74. Her love of children led to her teaching preschool children in Sunday School. One of her fondest memories was her introduction to Dwight and Mamie Eisenhower one Easter Sunday, as the little ones lined the walkway to welcome them. It was through this church affiliation that Florence developed many life long friendships. The Children's Home Society was another one of her charity activities that she loved. She helped plan several fundraising galas through the years to benefit children in need of homes and adoptive families. Florence' love of the desert prompted her to join the Palm Desert Historical Society in her later years. Her photographs, memorabilia, and an unbelievable gift for remembering details earned her many accolades from the society. From the sign that once greeted visitors - "Welcome to Palm Desert, a Planned Community of your Dreams," to its current oasis of golf courses and condominiums, Florence was there to witness it all. Although living away from Palm Desert for ten years this month, she kept in touch with the "goings on" in her favorite town. Florence is survived by her daughter, Annette LeTourneau of Monterey, Calif.; step-daughters, Phyliss Hancock of Monterey, Calif., Suzie Olson (Gary) of Bishop, Calif., Jeanne Jones (Tad) of So. Laguna, Calif.; step-sons, Jim Hancock (Colleen) of Encinitas, Calif., Willis Boyd (Patti) of Laguna Niguel, Calif.; grandchildren, Gina Marotta (Alex), Benjamin Frost (Cathy), Jennifer Wong (Barry), Tracy Frost; step-granddaughters, Lauren and Emma Hancock; great-grandchildren, Emily and Justin Wong. She was preceded in death by her infant son, Benjamin; her daughter, Lenore Cowan; her mother, Lenore Barron; her father, F. Ray Barron; her brothers, Ray and Keith Barron; and most recently, her husband and high school sweetheart, Willis Boyd. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM on Sun., April 19, 2009 at Casa de las Campanas in Rancho Bernardo, Calif. Annette LeTourneau is in charge of arrangements. 831-917-1606.
