Rev. Shaver was an 1868 graduate of Washington & Jefferson College and then attended Western Theological Seminary in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (later called Pittsburgh Theological Seminary) in 1868-1869). He was ordained for Presbyterian ministry in 1874 by the Presbytery of Fort Dodge in Iowa. He pastor of the Presbyterian Church in Glidden, Iowa (1875-1875), and then at Grand Junction, Iowa (1876-1877). He was the pastor of the Presbyterian Church in Linn Grove, Iowa (1878-1879), after which he went to the Dakotas to serve a congregation (1890-1893). Then he went back to Iowa, where he served the congregation Marne (1885-1888). Then he went to serve in Ohio until 1896. In 1906, he was at Chadburn, North Carolina.
