Technical Sergeant Noel was one of 16 airmen who perished when U.S Air Force KC-97G Stratofreighter #52-2711 struck Gray Mountain, 40 miles north of Flagstaff, Arizona, during a flight originating from Walker Air Force Base in New Mexico.

He was a Flight Engineer.

Son of Stafford and Ruth Elizabeth Noel.

The aerial refueling tanker was on a mapping and surveying flight over the Arizona desert and the southwest to observe and note route hazards for low-level, high-speed B-47 Stratojet training flights. The aircraft was last observed heading northwest from Winslow and entering heavy cloud cover. Shorty after, it made a wrong turn into the mountainside.

NORFOLK - T/Sgt. Richard W. Noel, 32, son of Mr. and Mrs. Stafford J. Noel Sr. of 520 Baker Rd., has been identified as one of 16 crewman killed when an Air Force tanker plane crashed into an Arizona mountain Tuesday.

The body will be shipped back to Norfolk for burial, a member of the family said last night.

The entire crew of the four-engine KC97 died when the aircraft, on a routine flight from Walker Air Force Base, N.M., crashed into the mountain and burned.

Sergeant Noel, a native of Winston-Salem, N.C., lived in Norfolk from 1940 until 1949. He joined the Air Force in the latter year.

He attended Granby High School, and during World War II served with the merchant marine. He survived two wartime ship sinkings in the Atlantic Ocean.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Mrs. Carol Noel of Roswell, N.M.; two brothers, Stafford J. Noel Jr. of 101 Anthony Rd. and Jesse C. Noel of 522 Baker Rd., and two sisters, Mrs. Helen Wright of 2408 Thoroughgood Dr. and Mrs. Eris Scott of 8012 Galveston Blvd.
