McCURDY, Fredrick H., 57, of RD 5, Cameron, W.Va., went to heaven on January 26, 2005 in the Wetzel County Hospital, New Martinsville, W.Va. As his grandchildren say, "he became one of God's special angels."
Fred was born June 29, 1947 in Wheeling, W.Va., the only child of the late William Howard and Genevieve "Sis" Chambers McCurdy.
He graduated from Cameron High School with the class of 1965 and attended West Virginia University. He served in the United States Air Force for four years that included a tour of duty in Vietnam from 1970-1971. He was a member of the Cameron American Legion, an honorary member of the Cameron FFA and was happy to be a part of the Marshall County Livestock Club. Fred was an active member of the Big Run Christian Church where he served as a past deacon and elder and a current church trustee. He retired from Xerox Corporation, after 29 years of service, in 2002. Fred often said he never missed the job but he certainly missed the customers and the wonderful people with whom he worked. Fred loved his family, his country and his God. He was never happier than when he was outside fishing or hunting.
Fred married Sue Quigley McCurdy on May 10, 1969. He was the proud father and father-in-law of Timothy S. and Paul Rine McCurdy and Andrew D. and Betty Midcap McCurdy of Cameron and Amanda M. and Christopher Lindsey of Elgin AFB, Fla. He was blessed with seven grandchildren that he dearly loved, Pamela and Derek Stanley, Cody Rine, Ty, Adam and Caitlin McCurdy all of Cameron, and Connor Douglas Lindsey of Florida. Fred is also survived by his father and mother-in-law, Donald R. and Ellen Quigley as well as sisters and brothers-in-law, David and Debbie Elson, Terry and Donna Logsdon of Cameron and Wesley and Michelle Quigley of Toledo, Ohio; and his aunts and uncle, Lois Mickey of Cameron and James and Vivian Dishman of Meadville, Pa. Fred was also loved by many nieces, nephews and extended family and friends. Fred cared deeply for the staff and fellow patients of the New Martinsville Dialysis Unit.
Friends and family will be received and memories shared at the Big Run Christian Church, Cameron, on Friday, January 28, 2005 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. as well as on Saturday, January 29, 2005 from 11 a.m. until the time of service at 1 p.m. The celebration of Fred's life will be led by the Rev. Thaddeus Allen and Michael Eskridge. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Military honors will be provided by the Cameron American Legion Post.
Fred made a wonderful decision, as he himself waited for a kidney transplant, to be an organ donor and on January 26, 2005, that decision became reality. His family, in honor of a wonderful man who loved life, prayerfully request that Fred's family and friends also consider the gift of organ donation which is truly the gift of life.
