On Sunday, January 13, 2013, Elmer Lee Dauster, 84, passed away in Sonora, Calif.
He was born on Tuesday, December 25, 1928, in St. Louis, Mo.
Elmer graduated from Beaumont High School in 1946 and later earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Washington University in St. Louis, Mo.
He served in the United States Marine Corp., as a para-marine in 1946 and later joined the VMF221 Corsair Reserve fighter squadron at Lambert Field in St. Louis, Mo. In June 1950 Lee's reserve unit was called to active duty and soon was heading for Korea. As an acting Scout Sgt. with a forward observer team, Lee was involved in heavy fighting during the April 1951 Spring offensive at the Hwachon Reservoir, which resulted in the loss of his left leg above the knee. Lee was awarded the Silver Star for his heroic actions in combat, which were instrumental in saving a platoon of South Korean Marines. Lee was also awarded two Purple Hearts.
Later in life, Lee continued to show his love for his fellow veterans by working tirelessly for the Korean war Veterans Association, including two terms as National Director, and terms as President of the Santa Clara and Sonora Chapters of the KWVA, past president of the G-3-1 (George Co.) Lee was also an active member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars Associations in Sonora.
Lee was held in such high esteem by the South Korean War Veterans that he was invited to represent all disabled US Korean War veterans at the 60th Anniversary Commemoration of the Korean War in Seoul, South Korea.
A successful insurance agent and business owner in the Bay Area, Lee also contributed to his community as a longtime member of the Rotary Club of Los Gatos.
Mr. Dauster is survived by his wife, Marie (Davis) Dauster, of Sonora, Ca, and step-father, to her five children, daughter, Debra Zink-Brody, of Modesto, Ca, son, Eric Dauster, of Oakland, Ca, daughter, Karin de Gier, of Walnut Grove, Ca, brother, Edward E. Dauster, Major, USMC (Ret.) of Warrenton, Va.
An orator, storyteller, humorist, marksman, inventor, poet, Lee was a man of boundless good humor. He will remain "always in our hearts", and will be forever missed by those whose lives he touched.
