Vice Consul for the American Diplomatic Mission in Persia, later Iran. Amid religious strife between members of the Bahai faith and Muslims, Imbrie and his wife visited a relious shrine. They were warned not to approach the well, as women were present. They respected local traditions, but a mob attacked their carriage. The Americans were dragged out and savagely beaten, and stabbed with a saber. Local police stood by and did nothing. He was taken to the hospital, where the mob continued their attack. He died from his wounds.
