William's father, John (1825-1894) worked at a stave mill owned by Steffens & Knorr.
William helped his father on their 40-acre tract of land in Sterling Twp., clearing timber and helping convert it to a farm. He left home in March 1880-1890 and then returned to the old homestead, helping with its cultivation, until 1894.
He served as Clerk of Sterling Twp from 1893-94. In 1894, he was elected chairman of the republican county central committee for four years (Past and Present of Macomb County, page 230)
In 1895, he was elected Sheriff of Macomb County, MI and moved to Mt Clemens. He was re-elected to a second term and then retired back to the farm in 1898. He sold the farm after two months at home and returned to Mt. Clemens.
In 1904, he was elected to the State Legislature, representing his district.
