Leonard was born to immigrant German parents in Clarkston, Washington, on December 31, 1920. He was one of the youngest of nine children born to Anna (Nuxall) and Thony Aichlmayr. For more than 35 years, Leonard worked for Centennial Mills, a division of ADM, in their Portland offices. He held the position of vice president of marketing and sales.

Leonard was a man who loved the outdoors and would have liked to have been a mountain man. He loved fishing, hunting and golfing. He was a man of great independence. He was also a great storyteller with a tremendous sense of humor.
