Eugene "Gene" Crittenden Templeton was the son of Margaret D. Enlow Templeton (1865-1956) and Joseph Crittenden Templeton (1858-1951).
After enrolling in 1906, he earned two degrees in geology, (mining engineering), from Stanford University, where he was also an instructor while completing his post-graduate work in 1911-1912.
Gene was a highly regarded expert in mining engineering and for the next 18 years he traveled the world doing geologic field work and negotiations in petroleum bearing regions of the U.S, Canada. Russia, Europe, Siberia, Peru, Venezuela, Cuba, China, Honduras, Mexico and other regions.
In 1918 he enlisted and served in France until 1919 as a private in Company C, 27th Engineers.
On 21 Jan, 1922 in Peking, China, Gene married Carolyn Elizabeth Thompson, daughter of Elizabeth S. (Piper) and Allison J. Thompson. They had two children, Charles Thompson and John C. Templeton.
