Harlow Eldredge Smoot II, M.D., age 77, died Monday, January 7, 2013 at his home in Provo, Utah surrounded by his family. He was born July 4, 1935 in Salt Lake City, Utah, the eldest child of Seth Eldredge Smoot and Lillian Gladys Hurst. Named after his grandfather, he was the first great grandchild of Reed Smoot, LDS Apostle and US Senator. Harlow graduated from B.Y. High and Brigham Young University where he served with the Intercollegiate Knights. He graduated from UCLA School of Medicine after which he completed a rotating internship and a three-year residency in obstetrics and gynecology at LDS Hospital where he served as chief resident his final year. He served as a Captain in the US Air Force, practicing obstetrics and gynecology at Elmendorf Air Force Base in Anchorage, Alaska. Following his Air Force service, he practiced medicine for 35 more years in Utah and California. He loved his profession and being able to help others. He kept current on the latest medical advances and maintained his license throughout his life.
During his internship at LDS Hospital, he met Carol Lee Walkingshaw. They were married in the Los Angeles LDS Temple on June 27, 1963. He delivered all seven of his children. They have 15 grandchildren. He was a wonderful father and grandfather. He loved his family and enjoyed spending time with them.
He was an active member of the LDS Church where he held various callings, including serving in the Provo Temple. He loved the Fourth of July and fireworks. Other interests included attending education week and BYU religion classes, tennis, history and civil war activities, BYU athletics, books, films and photography.
He is survived by: his wife, Carol Lee; children: Rebecca Smoot, Provo; Deborah (Shawn) Henderson, Orem; Jennifer Smoot, Lehi; Harlow (Kristin) Smoot, North Las Vegas; Cassandra (Troy) Dickerson, Las Vegas; Stephen (Evgenia) Smoot, American Fork; and Christopher (Karen) Smoot, Springville; 15 grandchildren; sisters, Linda (Richard) Wheeler, Casper, WY; Sandra (Ronald) Dallin, Provo; brother, Reed (Julia) Smoot, Provo; and brother-in-law, Michael Kawasaki, Provo. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Diana Kawasaki.
Funeral Services will be held Monday, January 14, 2013 at 12:00 Noon in the Mojave LDS Chapel, 3050 Mojave Lane, Provo, UT. Family and friends may attend a Viewing that morning from 10:00 am to 11:30 am prior to the services. Interment in the Provo City Cemetery with Military Honors. Funeral Directors: Utah Valley Mortuary.
