Mr. Applegate was born June 11, 1927, in Eugene to Albert and Ruth Heagney Applegate. He married Charlotte Fehly on Feb. 25, 1950. She died Sept. 3, 2003.
He attended University High School in Eugene and Oregon State College - now Oregon State University - in Corvallis. He served in the Marine Corps Reserve and the Navy SeaBees. He was a civilian personnel specialist for the Department of the Navy. He later worked as a forester for the Oregon State Forestry Department and the U.S. Forest Service. He lived in various cities in Oregon, Washington and California, and spent time in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
Mr. Applegate was mayor of Yoncalla and served on the city council and the board of directors for the Yoncalla Rural Fire Protection District. He also served on the board of directors for the Modoc Council of the Boy Scouts of America, and the board of directors of the Kitsap County chapter of the American Red Cross.
He was a life member of both the National Rifle Association and the Marine Corps Association.
Survivors include a son, Robert, of Yoncalla, a grandchild and a great-grandchild.
