CO A 4 BAT 22 VA REG CSA
First enlisted at 15 years of age in the Home Guard, Capt. William H. Dulaney's Co. 4th battalion, 22nd VA Reserves. In 1864 at age 18 transferred to Company F 24th Virginia Infantry, CSA and served until Lee's surrender, in 1865. He was with the regiment in the defense of Richmond and Petersburg, along with brothers Jacob Allen (Check)and George A. They took part of the battle of Drury's Bluff. Just prior to the fall of Richmond in 1865, Harvey Milton fell ill and was sent to Montgomery Co. VA, White Sulphur Springs which had been converted to a military hospital. When told of Lee's surrender he notified his father living on Sinking Creek in nearby Giles Co. VA. His father James Frederick sent a horse to meet him on top of Brush Mountain. Fearing capture Harvey Milton avoided Blacksburg occupied by Yankee Calvary.tombstone states Co. A 4 Bat 22 Va Reg.
After the war he and his brother "Check" went to Illinois and worked on farms for awhile Then he and his brother returned to Cloyd's Farm in the New River Horseshoe(Now Pulaski CO. VA. Where Harvey Milton served as an overseer for his future father-in-law Robert Achilles Dudley who managed the farm. After his marriage to Nancy Dudley they moved to the Franklin Bell Farm ( now site of Radford Arsenal) in the New River Horseshoe, Pulaski CO. VA. While managing that farm the first 8 of 13 children were born. The final four were born in the new family home at Longshop, Montgomery CO.VA. which is occupied by his direct descendants.
