E.W. Dewey Dies Here At Age 69
Edward Walling Dewey, 69, member of an old and prominent Bennington family, who was for many years treasurer and general plant manager of the H.E. Bradford Co. died Thursday at his home on Main Street.
He was the son of Charles H. and Emma Bradford Dewey and was born in Bennington May 31, 1891. He had been a lifelong resident. A graduate of New Bedford, Mass., Institute of Technology, he also graduated from Philadelphia Textile Institute.
For some years before becoming associated with the Bradford mill, Mr. Dewey was with the Bennington Hosiery Co. He had been in an executive position with Bradford until his retirement in January 1959.
He was a recognized leader in the textile industry and was a member of national and state industrial organizations. He had formerly been active in Bennington Club, Mt. Anthony Club and Bennington Lodge of Elks.
Survivors are his wife, the former Janet Shurtleff, whom he married in Bennington; two sons, Robert B. Dewey, Hudson Falls, N.Y., and Charles H. Dewey of Shaftsbury; one daughter, Mrs. Donald (Jean) C. Carr of Lakewood, Ohio; two sisters, Mrs. George Brown and Miss Cynthia Dewey, both of Norwalk, Conn.; 11 grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be held at 2 pm on Saturday from his home on Main Street, with the Rev. Frederick R. Wolf, rector of St. Peter's Episcopal Church, officiating. Burial will be in the family lot in Park Lawn Cemetery.
Friends may call at the Dewey residence this afternoon and evening.
