"Lawrence E. DeFrates, 73, of 2103 E. Ash St., died at 8:55 a.m. Friday at Memorial Hospital, following a short illness. A lifelong resident of Sangamon County, Mr. DeFrates was born in Cantrall, the son of William and Carrie Reis DeFrates. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lutitia and a son Homer. Mr. DeFrates was a member of Third Presbyterian Church. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Fern Walker of LeClaire, Iowa and Mrs. Betty Bravo of Compton, Calif.; one son, Lawrence R. DeFrates of Compton, Calif., and seven grandchildren. Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at the Ellinger and Kunz Funeral Home with Rev. H.M. Hildebrandt officiating. Burial will be in Oak Ridge Cemetery." (Illinois State Journal, 9 Jan 1965)
