John volunteered for Civil War army service in the 103rd Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, July 30, 1862, at Brownhelp Twp., Lorain County, Ohio for a term of 3 years. Occupation: Farmer He was mustered into Company F. Rank: Private. He was wounded at the Battle of Armstrong's Hill, south of Knoxville, Tennessee, November 25, 1864. The U.S.General Army Hospital at Cleveland, Ohio records show that he was admitted to Ward H, March 30, 1864. He was apparently returned to duty and mustered out with his company at Raleigh, North Carolina, June 12, 1865. He died at the Ohio Soldiers' and Sailors' Home(now the Ohio Veterans' Home)near Sandusky, Ohio.
