William Zimmerman Dixon was born February 22, 1823 in South Carolina. He married Rebecca Landrum, the daughter of George Landrum and Rebecca Drake, in Montgomery, Alabama on January 8, 1841.

The Dixon family is found on the 1850 census in the 1st district, Montgomery, Alabama. They are listed on the census next to Rebecca’s brother, Benjamin Louis Landrum. It is interesting that both families have a daughter named Antoinette and a son named George.

The Dixon family moved to Texas between 1852 and 1856. They settled in Carolina, Falls County, Texas. This was one of the earliest settlements in Falls County west of the Brazos River. The family is found on the 1860 census in Carolina, Falls County, Texas. Once again Rebecca’s brother is listed on the same page of the census. This time it is Samuel Landrum. Benjamin Louis Landrum will join his siblings in Texas in 1867.

William Zimmerman Dixon was a farmer and a stock raiser. He was active in the community. He was a Sheriff of Falls County in 1868 according to a list prepared by J. A. Phipps, Jr. while he was District Clerk (1935) according to “History of Falls County”. He was a founding member of Masonic Lodge No. 330 according to “A History of Western Falls County Texas”.

By November 1870, the family was living in Precinct No. 5, Austin County, Texas. The post office was Industry.

William Zimmerman Dixon was said by older family members to have fought in some phase of the Texas Revolution. He enlisted in the Texas State Militia in Austin County on July 10, 1863. He served as First Lieutenant in Company A, 23rd Brigade, commanded by J. R. Sayles. On April 10, 1864, he enlisted at Camp Travis in Hempstead as a Private in Company A, 20th Texas Infantry Regiment. This Regiment was known as Elmore’s Regiment. This unit patrolled the coast from Galveston to the Sabine River. His military records are included in the photos.
