Born October 30, 1921, in Charleston, she was the daughter of the late Jennings Bryan and Lucy Forest Summers Harmon. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Edward "Pete" Berends and daughter, Bryanise Lynett Berends.
Phyllis is survived by a son, Clarence Edward "Chipper" Berends Jr. of Charleston and daughter, Victoria Denalu Elliott of Clendenin; brothers, Dale L. Harmon of Durham, N.C. and Jennings B. Harmon of Clayton, Ohio; and many nieces and nephews.
Phyllis moved to Los Angeles, Calif. in 1945. She came back to Charleston after about a year but returned to Los Angeles in 1949, where she married and raised her children. She enjoyed her time in Los Angeles where she collected autographs of more than 200 movie stars. She moved to Lompoc, Calif., where she lived eight or ten years before returning to Charleston in 1973, after the death of her husband.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Monday, December 31, at Good Shepherd Mortuary, South Charleston with Bishop John Leiphead officiating. Burial will follow in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens.
