Florence, known as "Flora" all her life, was born on a farm in Liberty Township (now, Liberty District), just outside Cameron on October 9, 1882. She attended the public one-room school nearby and completed the 8th grade, which was the equivalent of high school today. As a farmer's daughter, she early learned the value of hard work, and only learned to take her ease in her last years. She married James Frank Duncan on January 6, 1904 and moved to his home in Cameron, where she lived the rest of her life. She raised four children to adulthood and saw them all graduate from college and become teachers. Flora spent her time keeping house, canning, sewing and tending to her little vegetable garden. She was an expert quilter and crocheted many fine household items which are still in use by her grandchildren today. In her later years, she took up oil painting. During her lifetime, she wrote hundreds of letters to friends and relatives, detailing the ordinary happenings of the day in town and at home. She was very active in her church and in the Eastern Star. After the death of her husband, she was teased for "becoming a member of the jet set," as she took her first airplane ride, then began to fly as far as Tucson and New Orleans to visit those of her children and grandchildren who had left Cameron. After an active life, she died peacefully on June 19 1969 and was laid to rest beside her husband on June 23 1969.
