Edward Samuel Calvert (1834-1900) married Nelly C. Hoffman (1851-1925), daughter of Capt. Fred Hoffman (1814-73), of Cincinnati.

Edward Calvert's father was Maj. John Strother Calvert (1806-70) who lived in Shenandoah County, Va. He served in the Virginia House of Delegates, 1850-51, 1855-56, was elected State Treasurer, -1870, and was a major in the 10th Virginia Regiment. He married c1833, Catharine Ann Savage (1815-45). Their four children were Edward Samuel (1834-1900); Mary Frances (1840-72) who married in 1856, Col. George W. Murphy (1835-); Catherine Lee (1841-69) who married Maj. William H. Kirker (CSA)(1831-84); and Judge George Ralls Calvert (1837-91).

Judge George Ralls Calvert (1837-91), attorney, and judge of the Shenandoah County Court married in 1868, Annie M. Clinedinst (1844-1938). Their six children were Catherine Ann (1870-1965) who married in 1892, Dr. Ralph B. Foster (1866-1916) and lived in Fosstown, Mn.; John Strother (1872-1949) who was district superintendent of Western Union Telegraph in Richmond, Va.; Mary Frances (1875-1950) who married in 1903, Professor William Bernard Thompson, of Sioux Falls, S.D.; George Ralls (1879-1922) who was superintendent of Western Union in Birmingham and married Louise Smith (1877-1961); Grace (1884-1938) who married Professor Henry K. Barbe (1873-1952), of Fayetteville, WVa; and Edna Spiller Calvert (1887-1956).
