Zillah Elizabeth Dew was born in 1845. The area of Edgecombe County, NC, where she was born became part of Wilson County, NC by 1855.

At the age of 21, she married Thomas Jefferson Newsom in Wilson County, on January 14, 1867. She died about 12 years later, during the spring of 1879, at the age of 32. She was survived by her husband, one son, two daughters, and one or two sisters. She was greatly missed by her family and friends.

Her parents were named John Franklin Dew (1821-1877) and Martha Elizabeth (Simms) Dew (1828-1859). Her two younger sisters were named Mary Elizabeth "Kitty" Dew (1849-1917) and Martha Simms Dew (1859-after 1870). The grave sites for her parents and sisters cannot be found. They might have been interred with no headstones, at the original Dew Cemetery in Wilson County. It was a family tradition for the Dews to have grave sites with no headstones. Some of her children have grave sites at Maplewood Cemetery, but her children's plot in the East Section on Lot 31 of Myrtle Street is in a different location than her own plot, which is located in the East Section on Row A.

She was named "Zillah" after her maternal grandmother, who was Zillah (Brinkley) Simms (1797-1851) of Edgecombe County, NC. "Zillah" is a Biblical name, found in Genesis 4:22. She was named "Elizabeth" after her mother. "Elizabeth" is another Biblical name, found in Luke 1:5.

After she died, her sister named Mary Elizabeth "Kitty" Dew (1849-1917) came to stay with the children. The family kept close ties over the years. As late as 1917, "Aunt Kitty" had a house in Wilmington, located only a few doors down from her brother-in-law named Thomas Jefferson Newsom.

Her mother died young at the age of 31, when Zillah Elizabeth (Dew) Newsom was about 14 years old. She lived to be two years older than her mother, passing on at the age of 33.
