Dr. James Jones, 86, of Courthouse Road, Amherst, died Monday, February 24, 2003, at the Life Care Center in Winter Haven, Florida, after a brief illness.

Dr. Jones was born May 29, 1916, son of the late Charles and Mary Wiseman Jones. He lived in Ethridge, Tennessee with his parents and later his grandparents after the untimely death of his mother in 1919.

He moved with his father for a short stay in Ohio and later to Texas. In 1951, he and his young family moved to Amherst. Upon his retirement, he and his wife set up a second home at the Carefree Country Club in Winter Haven.

He was the husband of the former Anna L. (Peg) Moore, whom he met at the outset of World War II and married afterward.

Dr. Jones was a well-known physician in the Souhegan Valley for many years prior to his retirement. He had set up a medical practice in 1951 after moving to Amherst. As an old-time family doctor, he cared for the young and old, their sneezes and bruises, through the joy of birth and the sorrows of illness and death.

While practicing medicine, he served as chief of staff at the former Nashua Memorial Hospital and served on the board of directors of the Milford Hospital Association. After leaving private practice, he helped establish a network of clinics associated with St. Joseph Hospital.

Despite retirement, Dr. Jones continued to practice care for people, especially for children and most especially for his grandchildren.

Besides medicine, he had a passion for golf and painting and an insatiable appetite for travel.

Dr. Jones was in the Army at the outset of World War II. He participated in the American efforts in the North Africa campaign and later in Italy.

He graduated from Wellington High School in Texas in 1934. He attended Texas Tech University and received a degree in zoology. He obtained his medical degree from Boston University and completed his residency in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Besides his wife, survivors include two sons, Donald and Kenneth; a daughter, Beverly; a half sister, Mary Lou Wright; and seven grandchildren.

The Crisp-Coon Funeral Home in Winter Haven, Florida, is in charge of arrangements.
