Raymond graduated from Jonesport High School in 1938, served in the U.S. Army, graduating from Motor Transport School at Fort McPherson, GA, with a rating of 1st class machinist. Raymond worked as a commercial fisherman for more than 85 years, receiving his first fishing license at the age of 9.
Raymond is survived by his wife of 16 years, Barbara Smith of Jonesport; children, Herbert L. (Linda); William R. (Ruth); Ralph L. (Joyce) and Jean M. Guptill (William); Rev. David R. (Donna); stepdaughters, Bethany Shute (Sherwood) and Alissa Dye (Michael); brother, Leon R. Smith Jr. (Angelina); sisters-in-law, Betty Smith and Janis Woodward; 22 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his first wife of nearly 54 years, Algie "Louise" Woodward Smith, in 1996; his parents; brother, Robert Smith; sisters, Lucille and Marilyn Smith; grandson, Dwayne Smith; and great-grandsons, Cameron Isaac Farris and Cole William Guptill.
A funeral service on Dec. 24, at Pentecostal Lighthouse Church, with Pastor Denzil A. Channell officiating. Committal will be at Greenwood Cemetery, Jonesport.
