Wife of George Dale.

An original German birth/baptismal certificate or "taufschein" has survived, the original in the possession of a descendant living in Sun City, Arizona. Susan is listed as one of Jacob and Barbara Winkelman's children in the 1850 US PA census for Northumberland Borough, Northumberland county, PA. Her name also appears concurrently above her parents household listing in the census records where she is listed living with a "second" family by the name of WALLACE. It is this compiler's oppinion that Susan, then aged 17, was working next door in this household as a caretaker of a small child or, perhaps, as a domestic. The Wallace family, as indicated in these records had acquired property valued at $31,300. A copy from the pages of the DALE family bible verifies the marriage of Susanna and George Dale. She was united in marriage by John Cake, Esq., of Northumberland, PA. Coincidentaly, John Cake, Esq. also married her younger sister, Phoebe, six months later. Susanna's name is listed as a communicant at the United Lutheran and German Reformed Church, located on 3rd and Queen Streets in Northumberland. The date is November 12th, 1848. Interesting to note that she is the only Winkelman family member listed; however, there are many "DALES" listed in this congregation. According to research submitted by Dale descendants, Susanna and George's name first appeared in the Iowa STATE Census for the year 1856, noting their new settlement west. This compiler feels that they may have been in Iowa only a short time, speculating that they left Pennsylvania soon after Susanna's father Jacob Winkelman died in 1855, one year earlier.
