John Rector Dolan, one of the sons of James and Harriet Dolan, was born on a farm near Freeman, Cass County, Missouri, August 23, 1845.
At the age of 16 years he enlisted in the Confederate Army, under the command of General Sterling Price, and served until he surrendered at Shreveport, LA.
After the Civil War he went West, where he engaged in freighting, railroading and prospecting. after seven years of strife among the Indians, Mr. Dolan returned to Cass county, where he spent the major portion of the remainder of his life.
In 1877 he was united in marriage to Miss Lucinda Franse. Eight children were born to this union, two of whom--Ernest and Clarence-- are deceased. The surviving children are: Homer, Ward, Marie, Winnifred, Thelma and Gordon. The first named resides in Kansas City, while the remaining children, together with their mother, live near Klamath Falls, Ore.
From 1899 to 1903 Mr. Dolan honorably and efficiently served Cass County as its recorder of deeds. After his retirement from that office, he moved with his family to his farm in the Everett community, and after a residence there of three years returned to Harrisonville, where they lived for two years, when they moved to Kansas City. Five years later he moved with his family to a ranch adjoining that of his son, Ward, near Klamath Falls, Ore., where he resided until his death on Wednesday, July 4, 1917.
John Rector Dolan was converted to the Christian faith in 1889, and during the many years of his useful and honorable life the Democrat can state, without fear of contradiction, that he never wronged a fellow citizen. Besides his wife and six children, the deceased i also survived by three brothers-William Dolan of Freeman, Mo., and Thomas and Monroe Dolan both of Rocky Ford, Colo. and all of whom were present at the funeral.
The body of mr. Dolan arrived in Freeman last Saturday afternoon, in charge of his wife and daughter, Miss Marie, of Klamath Falls, and Homer Dolan of Kansas City. Funeral services were held at the Freeman Presbyterian Church on Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, conducted by the Rev. J. D. Robins, pastor of the Methodist Episcopal Church (South) of Peculiar. Burial was made in the Freeman Cemetery.

Former County Recorder Passes Away in Oregon
John R Dolan, past 70 years old. For many years a resident of Cass County, died the first of the week at the family home in Klamath Falls, Oregon. His death was due to palpitation of the heart, and he was seriously ill only about ten days.
The body is being shipped to Freeman for burial. Mrs Dolan and their eldest daughter, Marie, expect to reach Kansas City, with the body Saturday morning at nine o'clock. They will be joined there by the eldest son, Homer Dolan, and the party expects to reach Freeman cemetery about 2:30 o'clock.
The Dolan Family with the exception of the eldest son has resided in Oregon for the past three years. Besides those mentioned the surviving children are Misses Winnie and Thelma and Ward and Gordon. William Dolan of Freeman is a brother of the deceased and another brother resides near Odessa.
Mr Dolan lived for a great many years in the Freeman neighborhood, and for a time was engaged in the mercantile business there. He, and his family came to Harrisonville when he was elected county recorder, and after serving his term of office here, removed to Kansas City, later to Colorado, thence to Oregon.
