The graveside service for James Edward Cornell Jr. of Jackson, former owner of the Elder Hotel in Indian Springs, will be held at 2 p.m. today in Jackson City Cemetery. Haisten Funeral Home of Jackson is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Cornell, 77, died Thursday at his home following a brief illness. For 134 years, Mr. Cornell's family owned and operated the Elder Hotel in Indian Springs, a summer resort that drew vacationers from around the Southeast. When the Elder family built the hotel in 1851, it was one of the largest hotels in the state and was famed for the mineral water that flowed from a nearby spring.
Open for three months out of the year - from late spring to midsummer - the hotel, which permitted no children, created a relaxing atmosphere for the harried city dweller. On the porch, there were 57 Brumby rocking chairs that guests retired to after Sunday dinner. "It was truly a bygone era," said Mr. Cornell's stepson, H.M. King of Macon. Guests frequently stayed for several weeks. The hotel's amenities included a swimming pool, miniature golf course, picnic grounds and a skating rink.
Mr. Cornell and his wife took over management of the hotel following his father's death in 1974. The hotel was forced to close 10 years ago, "since most of the longtime patrons had either died or moved away," Mr. King explained. A fire that ravaged the structure soon after its closing was suspected as being the work of arsonists, he added.
Mr. Cornell was born in Butts County, the son of James Edward Cornell Sr. and Grace Ham Cornell. He graduated from Georgia Military Academy and attended the University of Georgia. During World War II, Mr. Cornell was a lieutenant in the Navy. In addition to his service aboard a destroyer escort in the Pacific Ocean, he served aboard a heavy cruiser, the USS Indianapolis, before it was sunk by Japanese forces.
Also surviving are his wife, Mabel Drew Cornell, and a stepdaughter, Dori E. Clark of Melbourne, Fla.
