Dr. Bruce Adkins, age 80 of Gate City, VA passed away Friday night, December 7, 2012, at his home surrounded by his loving family.

Dr. Adkins was born in Dickenson County, VA. After graduating from Dickenson Memorial High School in Clintwood, VA, he worked his way through Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, TN. After proudly serving a term in the U.S. Army, he received the G.I. Bill which enabled him to pursue a career in medicine. In 1961 he received his Doctorate of Medicine from the University of Tennessee in Memphis.

He practiced family medicine in Clintwood, VA and Weber City, VA for 36 years. Upon his retirement, he volunteered at The Friends At Need Clinic in Kingsport, TN. He was inducted into the Professional Hall of Fame at Lincoln Memorial University in 2008.

He accepted Christ at the age of 13 and was an active member of First Baptist Church of Weber City where he served as Deacon and Sunday School teacher for many years.

He enjoyed serving on Mission Trips. Dr. Adkins traveled to Africa for a Medical Mission Trip in 1990 and to Mexico on an Evangelistic Team in 1996. He also served on the World Changers Mission Team across the United States and worked in local and regional missions with the Clinch Valley Baptist Association. He was a founding member of the Scott County Camp of Gideons International. He lived his life through service to others.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Houston and Effie Adkins; 3 brothers, Clifford, Buford, and Herman Adkins.

Surviving are his loving wife of 55 years, Anita Rakes Adkins; son, Dr. Steven M. Adkins and wife Connie of Gate City, VA; daughter, Andrea Adkins Sheppard and husband Ron of Gate City, VA; 3 grandchildren, Caitlyn Adkins Cox and husband Kevin of Superior, CO, Samantha Adkins and boyfriend David Culbertson of Gate City, VA, and Chad Sheppard and wife Shana of Jefferson City, TN, along with a brother, Don Adkins and wife Patsy of Kingsport, TN,; several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours are Monday evening December 10, 2012 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Weber City, VA.

A funeral service following at the church at 7:00 p.m. with the Rev. Dean Smith and Dr. Lester Morelock officiating. Music will be provided by the First Baptist Church of Weber City Choir.

Graveside service will be conducted on Tuesday, December 11, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at Holston View Cemetery. Nephews and friends will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be The Brothers In Christ Sunday School Class of First Baptist Church of Weber City.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in memory of Dr. Bruce Adkins to the First Baptist Church of Weber City, Weber City, VA or to Scott County Camp of Gideons International.
