NOTE: Partial Obituary for John Blackman
...to rouse him. Failing to get any response to his calls and other efforts to awaken the old gentleman, who seemed to be in a deep sleep, a physician was summoned, who found that the left side and head had been paralysed. He continued in a state of semi-consciousness, indicating occasionally by the use of his right hand that he knew his friends were near but not being able to otherwise communicate with them, until nine o'clock Sunday evening when he passed peaceably away.
Mr. Blackman was born in Higham, Kent County, England. For the past twenty-five years he made him in Bracebridge, having previously spent three years in Canada and seven years in Australia. The remainder of his life he lived in the land of his birth. He was not married. He leaves two sisters, Mrs. M.E. Colley, mother of Mr. J.F. Colley of Bracebridge; and Mrs. George Colley of Folkstone, England, besides a number of nephews and nieces.
For seven or eight years Mr. Blackman kept a small grocery and confectionery store at the top of the hill, opposite the public library, and did a big trade, principally in cent goods with the school children, who appreciated the big values the generous-hearted man gave them. In politics he was a Conservative and a strong Imperialist. He attended the Church of England.
The funeral took place on Wednesday afternoon to the Methodist Cemetery. Reverend A.J. Pue-Gilchrist, pastor of the Presbyterian Church, conducted the service.

JOHN BLACKMAN DEAD
On Sunday, November 15th, John Blackman passed peacefully away at the residence of his friends, Mr. and Mrs. J.F. Colley, at the residence of his friends, Mr. and Mrs. J.F. Colley, at the age of 79 years. The funeral took place yesterday to the Methodist cemetery. For many years Mr. Blackman has been a familiar figure in town, a kindly old gentleman for whom all had respect. Some years ago he kept a small store in town, but lately has lived retired. He was a veteran of the British Navy and was never married.
