Ruth Davis was born on June 19, 1944, in North Matewan, W.Va., to the late John Charlie Davis and Katherine Reid Davis. She soared with God's angels on Dec. 17, 2004, to be around the throne of God
Ruth received her early education in the Mingo County Public Schools, graduating from Matewan High School. She always loved and cared for children. Consequently, she entered West Virginia State College and received her B.A. and Masters Degree in Education. Her passion for excellence in teaching led her to be advocate for teachers and students. She began her lifelong teaching career at Tiskelwah Elementary, where she taught for 33 years. During her teaching career, she was an active association member. She served on the WVEA Executive Committee, NEA Director, President of Kanawha Teachers Association, KCEA Executive Committee, NEA Executive Committee and many other educational committees, promoting the growth and educational needs for children and teachers.
Ruth loved and cared for people. She was a compassionate caring and loving person. She was always thinking about others; never knew when to say no. She was a member of the Links, AKA, Phi Delta Kappa, and Pioneer Credit Union Board of Directors, NAACP, and many other organizations.
She joined the Mount Lebanon Baptist Church, Red Jacket, W.Va., at an early age. Ruth never lost sight of her personal relationship to her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She became a member of First Baptist Church, Charleston in 1968. Ruth was the women's Adult Sunday School Teacher, a member of the choir, a member of the Boyd Gleaners Club and she set up the Archives Room, which dates the history of the church from the beginning until the present.
Ruth's parents and one brother preceded her in death. She leaves to cherish her memories five sisters, Mr. LaEunice Williams (Ernest) of Cincinnati, Ohio, Mrs. Corrine P. Joyner (Alphonso) of Charleston, Ill., Ms. Essie Mae Davis of Atlanta, Ga., Ms. Linda S. Davis of Dayton, Ohio, and Mrs. Oneaster D. Drummer of Cincinnati; three brothers, Arthur Davis of Institute, George Davis of Columbus, Ohio, and John Ed Davis of Los Angeles, Calif.; aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, grand-nieces, and nephews, and many close friends.
Ruth, God commissioned you to do a task. You accepted the task without ever complaining. You gave your all. You fought the good fight and now your loving smile is being rewarded by the Almighty. We love you and we miss you.
Service will be 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 23, at the First Baptist Church.
