Silas Orvile Kellogg was born near Champion, Jefferson County, New York, Jan. 5, 1822. His father Marcus Kellogg (Marquis de Lafayette Kellogg), and his mother, Elizabeth Perkins, brought their family to Loraine County Ohio, when "grandpa" was but a lad. From there they went to Geneva, Illinois, thence to Fon du Lac, WI, where he formed the acquaintence of Isabel Brisbane whom he married November 6, 1850. They shortly repaired to Jackson County, IA where they made their home for 39 years. Here their family of 6 children were born and reared. They moved from their residence at Preston during the spring of 1890 to be near their children at Gilmore City. During the early part of last winter he contracted la grippe which impaired his health and resulted in his death April 30, 1893, from heart failure.
"As a husband he was kind and attentive. As a father he seemed to live for his children"
