The son of John Dewdney and Ann Mathews, both of Stepney, Robert came to Canada at age 14 to join his grandfather Daniel Dewdney in Toronto. He became a blacksmith and married Elizabeth Ann Henley Stratton on May 23, 1857 in Markham Ontario. They lived in Toronto East and had six children.
