Mrs. Harriet A. (Jarvis) Copeland was born in Smyrna, Harrison county, Ohio, July 15, 1832, and departed this life Wednesday, September 5, 1917, at 10:40 p.m., after an illness of only about twenty-five hours. At the time of her death she was aged 85 years, 1 month, and 21 days. In her father's family there were eight children, and she was the oldest and last survivor of the family.

She was united in marriage to Wm. Copeland at Sewellsville, Ohio, November 10, 1857. Three children were born to this union. A daughter, Mrs. T. J. Umphrey died in 1907, and the son A. R. Copeland died last December. One daughter, Carolyn, remains to mourn the loss of the devoted mother.

The deceased has been a resident of Morning Sun for the past fifty years, and during all these years she has been known as an earnest Christian loving mother, and a kind and helpful woman, a loyal wife, a devoted and neighbor. She embraced the Christian religion as a girl, and during all the intervening years she adorned the profession of her childhood. She was a charter member of the Methodist Episcopal church of Morning Sun, and until her declining years was always present in her place in the House of God, and found sweet comfort in the precious promises of God's word. Her end is peace. With long life God satisfied her. "Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth; yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labors and their works do follow them."

The funeral service was held from the Methodist Episcopal church of Morning Sun, Friday afternoon, at 2:30 o'clock, conducted by the Reverend A. E. Cameron, assisted by the Reverend F. A. Mayfield, of Eldon, and the local church choir. Interment was in Elmwood cemetery.
