Marjorie M. Meyers, 92, of Davenport, Iowa, died Thursday, August 21, 2008 at Genesis Medical Center, West Campus, Davenport. Celebration of Life services will be held at 1:30 PM Monday, August 25, 2008, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 2136 Brady Street, Davenport. Visitation will be 2-4 PM Sunday at Weerts Funeral Home, Kimberly at Jersey Ridge, Davenport. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday. Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church, Heartland Hospice, or to a charity of the donor's choice. Mrs. Meyers was born in 1916 in Grand Ridge, Illinois to Nathan A. and Charity E. Fleming. She married Gordon D. Meyers on October 31, 1936 in Marseilles, Illinois. Early in her career, Marjorie worked as a legal secretary in Kankakee and Chicago, Illinois and Davenport, Iowa. She later worked as a secretary at Adams Elementary School in Davenport. In 1971, she became an underwriter for Connecticut Mutual Insurance (now Mass Mutual), retiring in 1985. During her insurance career she earned the Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU) designation from the American College of Life Underwriters. She was one of the first two women to earn this designation in the Quad Cities area. She also was a Past President of Davenport Business and Professional Women, and the Executive Secretary of the Davenport Life Underwriters. Marjorie was an active member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, where she was a Past President of the Lutheran Church Women. She was a Past President of many educational organizations, including Educational Secretaries, Augustana Parents, Grant School PTA, J.B. Young Junior High PTA, and the Davenport Central Band Parents. In addition, she had been active in the United Way, serving as a section chairman. Other memberships included the Kings Daughters and Sons, Daughters of the Nile, Women of the Moose, the Camp Fire Board, and the Ridgecrest Volunteer Board. She was most proud to receive a 2001 Volunteer of the Year Award from the Davenport Museum of Art. Survivors include her husband, Gordon of Davenport, daughter, Linda (Ray) Smith of Clinton; daughter in law, Janis Meyers of Galesburg, IL; three grandchildren, Greg (Marcia) Smith, Mark (Kris) Smith and Kristen (Scott) Shumard; six great-grandchildren, Michael, Emily, Beth, Ryan, Jason and Aaron Smith; one niece and three nephews. Marjorie was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Nathan "Bud" Fleming, and her son, Paul G. Meyers.
